Arrests have started in the central London landmark at what may be the biggest protest so far against a ban on the proscribed organisation Palestine Action.

Officers started detaining protesters at the silent vigil in solidarity with the organization, which has been classed by the UK government as a terror organisation since July this year.

The organisers, Save Our Juries, had earlier stated they expected the turnout to be higher than previous protests, with over 1,500 individuals planning to attend, potentially beating an arrest record set at the 1961 protest against nuclear weapons, which was held at the same London location.

The police force also reported officers arrested six people in connection with a banner draped on a central London bridge in solidarity with the proscribed group.

Authorities stated: “Police responded rapidly, the sign was taken down and those six individuals were detained for backing a banned group.”

The protest proceeded despite the political leader urging protesters to call it off to “respect the grief of the UK Jewish community”, while Jewish figures called the action “phenomenally tone deaf” following Thursday’s killing of two individuals in the violent incident on a Jewish place of worship in Manchester.
