A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters approached the residence near the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the blast was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also located at the site, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the blast included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The official believed the blast had occurred on a level above the entrance and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
