Apex Legends' Niche Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible During This Update

Respawn Entertainment has a special treat prepared for Apex Legends gamers, perfectly timed for the holidays. Enthusiasts of this game's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on November 4th.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Named "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this feature provides gamers a burst of propulsion when climbing over obstacles. As explained key developer the design lead, this technique was previously existed of Apex Legends for some time, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." However it's challenging for the average player, and is mainly used by pro gamers in Ranked Mode or esports competitions. In this update, Respawn simplifies the process for players of all skill levels to successfully perform these advanced speed-boosts.

"This technique existed in Apex for a while, but executing it requires skill to perform and gamers might not realize it [is in the game] without external guides," Canavese states. "We're adding a visual cue so users can clearly identify the timing to activate the high-octane movement ability, opening up the mechanic and introducing new ways to compete for more players."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

What's the reason for making a previously obscure technique available to all players? Principal designer Josh Mohan says developers wants players to feel powerful — including ones who are new.

"[The playerbase] is doing other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we looked around at other games, observed what the community execute, and we wondered, 'What if we provide some of this power to a broader audience?'" the designer clarifies. "Because currently, certain techniques are somewhat awkward to access — you need to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. So we said, 'What if we make a polished version?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is primarily the central theme in this season, with Legends the gravity mage, Rampart, and the aerial combatant receiving buffs to help keep them in motion. Recovery time on her tactical ability has been decreased, and the Gravity Lift will propel players upward faster than it used to. Her defensive walls feature a roof and the ability to provide speed boosts to allies in range. But the spotlight is on aerial Valkyrie who's getting significant improvements this season, with various adjustments applied to make her stronger, faster, and deadlier.

"In my opinion many agree that her moment has arrived," says character developer the designer. "Certainly she was dominant previously, but due to the addition of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in today's Apex. It was an ideal chance for us to reexamine multiple elements in her abilities and sort of bring her back to her glory days."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To reclaim her competitive status in current strategies, the developer says Respawn evaluated all her skills and introduced some powerful changes. Her jetpack have been upgraded, boosting velocity during flight, and the jets themselves now recharge three times faster, enabling the player to spend more time in the air. She can no longer be harmed from her own Missile Swarm, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy ability — which lifts teammates skyward for repositioning or retreat — now takes much less time to activate. Additionally, she gains recently added Legend Upgrades that players can select to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her rockets, or further speed up her Skyward Dive activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on the pilot experience," he says.

Map Changes

Even the game's only floating arena, this location, receives a mobility-focused overhaul, with an extensive redesign that opens up choke points and renders securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. The developers state Apex Legends this update is all about providing gamers the resources they need to compete in the competition.

"Essentially, we were looking at the game's core identity as a movement shooter," explains lead Legend designer the lead.
